Bali has been one of the world's most popular travel destinations for over two decades — and it's easy to see why. The island offers a remarkable combination: ancient Hindu temple culture, terraced rice fields, world-class surfing, affordable luxury and genuine warmth from the Balinese people.
Ten days is the ideal length for a first trip: long enough to cover the main areas without rushing, short enough to avoid feeling like you've seen it all. Here's how to spend them.
Bali fast facts (2026)
- ✦Best months to visit: April–September (dry season, less humidity)
- ✦Currency: Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) — US$1 ≈ IDR 16,000
- ✦Budget per day: US$40–60 (budget), US$80–120 (mid-range), US$150+ (luxury)
- ✦Tourist levy: Bali now charges a US$10 tourist levy on arrival — pay online before you go
- ✦Getting around: rent a scooter (US$5–8/day) or hire a driver (US$35–55/day)
Days 1–3: Seminyak & Canggu (beach & cafe culture)
Start in Seminyak to settle in. The beach club scene here is legendary — Potato Head and Ku De Ta remain iconic, though pricier than elsewhere. Spend your mornings on the beach, afternoons exploring boutique shops, and evenings for sunsets and dinner.
Day 3, move north to Canggu — now the epicentre of Bali's digital nomad scene. Better surf breaks, better coffee, and a more relaxed vibe than Seminyak. The Old Man's bar at sunset is a Canggu institution.
Days 4–6: Ubud (culture, temples & rice terraces)
Ubud is Bali's cultural heart. Make the switch — the contrast from beach Bali is striking and refreshing. Must-do's:
- ✦Tegallalang Rice Terraces — iconic but touristy; go at 7am to beat crowds
- ✦Monkey Forest — 700 macaques in a sacred forest. Watch your belongings.
- ✦Ubud Palace & market — free, central, great for atmosphere
- ✦Cooking class — half-day classes around US$35 including market visit
- ✦Tirta Empul — sacred water temple where Balinese come to purify. Respectful dress required.
In Ubud, eat at a warung (local restaurant) rather than tourist places. A nasi goreng (fried rice) is IDR 30,000–50,000 (US$2–3). Identical quality, a quarter of the price.
Day 7: Nusa Penida day trip (or 2 nights)
Nusa Penida is the most dramatic scenery in the Bali region. Kelingking Beach — the T-Rex peninsula — is one of the most photographed spots in all of Southeast Asia. The fast boat from Sanur takes 30–45 minutes (US$20–25 return). If you can spare two nights, the island is worth it.
Days 8–9: Uluwatu & Bukit Peninsula
The Bukit Peninsula is a world apart — dramatic limestone cliffs, world-famous surf breaks (Padang Padang, Uluwatu) and a more rugged feel. Uluwatu Temple at sunset, followed by a Kecak fire dance performance (IDR 150,000 / ~US$9), is one of Bali's signature experiences.
Day 10: Slow morning & departure
Don't cram Day 10 with activities. A final swim, a coffee at your favourite cafe, last-minute gift shopping. Ngurah Rai airport is 15–30 minutes from most southern Bali areas depending on traffic (Bali traffic can be severe — budget extra time).

Is Bali still good value in 2026?
Yes — but it's no longer as cheap as it was five years ago. The influx of digital nomads has pushed up prices in Canggu and parts of Seminyak significantly. That said, if you eat local food, rent a scooter and stay in guesthouses, Bali remains extraordinary value. The key is avoiding the "expat bubble" pricing that's infiltrated some areas.
