Cairo with Kids
🐪 Honest family travel guide
Cairo can work for families but requires more planning — here's everything you actually need to know before booking: kid-friendly attractions, where to base yourself, stroller realities, and which months to avoid with young children.
Why Cairo is harder with kids
- ✦Interactive history for older kids
- ✦Costs stay reasonable for 4+ people
Best things to do with kids in Cairo
Pyramids of Giza + Sphinx at 8am opening (go straight past the touts)
Grand Egyptian Museum — Tutankhamun's full collection
Khan el-Khalili bazaar + El Fishawy café (open 250 years)
Islamic Cairo walk along Al-Muizz Street to the Citadel
Sunset felucca sail on the Nile from Garden City
Where to stay with kids
For families, apartment rentals beat hotels almost always — kitchen access means breakfast at your own pace and saving on every meal. Look for places with elevators (not all European apartments have them), washing machines, and walking distance to a park or playground. Cairo is amazing value for families — full villas with pools available for less than a hotel room in Europe.
Practical tips for Cairo with kids
Use Uber/Careem for everything — white taxis "broken meter" you every time. The metro costs pennies and beats traffic to Coptic Cairo.
A baby carrier may serve you better than a stroller for crowded areas and stairs in older buildings.
Koshary at Abou Tarek (the four-storey temple to Egypt's national dish), ful and taameya from street carts in Downtown, grilled pigeon if you're brave. Dinner culture is family-friendly in most local spots — staff is usually welcoming to kids.
At the pyramids, the camel photo extortion is the classic: a "free" photo on the camel, then a demand for cash before they'll let you down. Also ignore anyone saying the entrance is "closed" — they're steering you to a stable or perfume shop.
Best months to visit Cairo with kids
For families, weather matters more than for solo travellers — extreme heat or cold turns a fun trip miserable fast. The best months for a family trip to Cairo are October, November, December. Avoid June–August (38°C+) — uncomfortable weather is hard on young kids.
How many days do you need with kids?
Adults can pack Cairo into 4 days easily. With kids, plan for 6–7 days minimum — you'll do fewer activities per day (one major sight is enough), build in pool/park afternoons, and need recovery days between big outings.
