Santiago with Kids
🍇 Honest family travel guide
Santiago can work for families but requires more planning — here's everything you actually need to know before booking: kid-friendly attractions, where to base yourself, stroller realities, and which months to avoid with young children.
Why Santiago is harder with kids
- ✦Walkable — easier with kids
- ✦Costs stay reasonable for 4+ people
Best things to do with kids in Santiago
Cerro San Cristóbal — funicular or cable car for city and Andes views
Mercado Central seafood
Day trip to Valparaíso — colorful port city, about 90 minutes away
Day trip to Maipo or Casablanca wine valleys
Where to stay with kids
For families, apartment rentals beat hotels almost always — kitchen access means breakfast at your own pace and saving on every meal. Look for places with elevators (not all European apartments have them), washing machines, and walking distance to a park or playground. Santiago is reasonable on family accommodation — $120–180/night gets you a real 2-bedroom apartment in a central neighbourhood.
Practical tips for Santiago with kids
The Metro is clean, cheap and covers most of the city — a bip! card works on metro and buses. Valparaíso and the wine valleys are easy day trips by bus or tour.
Bring a lightweight stroller. Cobblestones can be rough — an off-road stroller helps.
Mercado Central is touristy but the seafood is genuinely excellent — or head to a barrio like Providencia for a more local scene. Dinner culture is family-friendly in most local spots — staff is usually welcoming to kids.
Very safe by regional standards, but pickpocketing happens on crowded buses and in the historic center — keep bags zipped and in front.
Best months to visit Santiago with kids
For families, weather matters more than for solo travellers — extreme heat or cold turns a fun trip miserable fast. The best months for a family trip to Santiago are March, April, May. Avoid June–August (winter smog buildup from the Andes basin trapping pollution, plus cold) — uncomfortable weather is hard on young kids.
How many days do you need with kids?
Adults can pack Santiago into 3 days easily. With kids, plan for 5–6 days minimum — you'll do fewer activities per day (one major sight is enough), build in pool/park afternoons, and need recovery days between big outings.
